ACTA; An Explanation by Anonymous

I'm probably not in the best state of mind to be arguing for and against any causes at the moment, but I do know that it's important to stand up against laws like SOPA and PIPA, but we mustn't neglect ACTA.

In theory it's very much similar to SOPA but right now I don't feel like there is enough attention being aimed towards this legislation as there was before, so I would appreciate if those that are so helpful in finding articles based on SOPA and PIPA could do the same for ACTA.

If you are unaware of what it is, here is a helpful video brought to my attention once again by TotalBiscuit.

Please

PLEASE

Watch this, post here, post on your facebook, Tumblr, MySpace, Bebo, whatever it is you use, and tell people about it. Post the video to them if you need to. It's important.

Thank you.

I'm not so sure. If you could point to some articles saying it has been that'd be helpful.

It's been passed for a while now, but some places (mainly Europe) still oppose it.

If you're not sure about it read the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement

The main difference here is that it's supposedly a world agreement, sort of like a UN for internet, but still plenty of people (countries) oppose it and don't recognize it.

Countries that agreed to it, and signed are: The United States, Australia, Canada, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Morocco, and Singapore. Was secretly signed about 3-4 months ago, but has been in drafts for years now.

Well, for the benefit of the United Kingdom users here, I'd like the word to be spread around. We don't need more of this ridiculous legislation.

Apparently this has been signed in some countries since 2011. Has it really done anything? Seems like a few countries who signed it don't agree with it either.

If this is restricting or will restrict my freedom of expression and communication privacy, it can get the hell out. Why don't they just change the definition of "freedom" while they're at it?

I believe Irland are suppost to be signing up to this soon. The really bad thing about this is that it has been done in secrate. Not sure how it will be handled in the UK, some form of parliamentry vote may have to take place to sign it.

UK readers can sign the No to ACTA petition on the UK Government petition site: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/20685

HAHAHAHA you guys think you have this bad? A guy signed this (and helped create it) on our part who's not even an elected official. Now the congress is pissed because they feel they bypassed legal procedures. This is about to be one huge can of worms in the US.

Australia signed this already apparently. I've not heard a single thing about this until now and even now that's only because of you guys. On TV and stuff over here it hasn't been mentioned.

The sad thing is, countries outside of USA and Europe countries, don't have much to gain when looking at the losses. I'm stunned to know places like NZ, etc signed this to begin with.

Yeah, well now you're beginning to see why I posted it. It's a bigger issue than it might look.

There is legitimacy in posting this, but I was thinking (as I usually do) that everyone is from America. On another forum someone from America just started a petition about it, and we're all like you're stupid.

Double Post

Here's my beef (pertaining to the USA) with it as I just posted it on another forum:
